A very good question that has been asked for many years. Should euthanasia be legal? I believe it should. There are a lot of people that believe it should be legal. If I was suffering from a terminal disease, and my pain could not be managed that would be the route I would like to go. The problem is a social-economic one. If my pain could be managed even if I was terminal then I would like nature to take its course. But I also have to figure out what will be the cost to my family and would my insurance company cover the medical aspect of pain management and hospice.
I suspect, but I could be wrong, that the hospital industry and the insurance industry would be against euthanasia. As long as I am alive I am making money for somebody. Once I am dead that's it the buck stops after my burial. If one thinks about it the same system applied to pets. There are occasions where there is a solution to a pet illness. However one just can't afford to pay for medication or long-term treatment. So one may decide to put the animal down because it is humane for the animal and of course one doesn't want their pet to suffer. On occasion, the vet might not put the animal down and will take custody of the animal. One has to sign over the paperwork of ownership and the animal could be sent over to a veterinarian hospital or university to be used as a test subject for certain medication to treat the animal's condition.
One cannot do that with a human being. Even though there are clinical trials for terminal patients it's still not the same thing. If you are going to go and you cannot control the pain; one has the right to off oneself. Other reasons that one may object to euthanasia might be religious reasons. The idea that one superior entity like a god it is the only individual the right to determine, the exact moment of passing into the Afterlife it's in the mind of many people and therefore euthanasia could actually be considered murder. There are many other reasons for euthanasia. I don't know how many are familiar with the movies " Soylent Green" and "Logan's Run". These movies also dealt with euthanasia for survival reasons. In Isaac Asimov Empire series a novel called "pebble in the sky" People were euthanized because they aged and were sick, the cutoff age was 60's.( I think the normal life expectancy in 50's was close anyway)
In all, coming back into the real world. Euthanasia should be allowed for many people. Right now people have in their medical directive an option that is they suffer a serious accident where they will be maimed and crippled for life not to be placed on life support. I have such directive. I refuse to be an economic burden on my family. Other have end-of-life directives as well. Some terminal patients have a DNR directive, that means if they suffer a stroke or heart attack as Natural consequences of their illness, they are not to be resurrected by medical technology. That is just my personal viewpoint.
